What is the difference between .pst, .msg & .eml file ?


PST file

Microsoft Outlook Personal Storage Table (PST) is a file that saves local copies of e-mails, contacts, notes, calendar entries, and more. The size of PST file grows rapidly due to usage of single database for storing all the data. Each PST file contains an appropriate message folder. For example, Inbox.pst contains all the emails stored in Inbox folder.

 

MSG File

A MSF file is a file format that is primarily designed for saving specific emails. The file is created by using Microsoft email program like, Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. To save your Outlook messages in MSG format, you will need to save it in “Outlook Message Format” type. MSG files in Microsoft Outlook are stored as “DocFile” or “COM structured storage OLE2 compound documents”, which is the similar procedure used by Excel, Word, etc.

 

EML File

EML is an email message format used by various email clients like, Outlook Express. .eml extension is reserved extension used for email files, which are created to agree with RFC 822 standard. Outlook Express can view and send EML messages as SMTP/MIME messages. These files contain different data like, email messages, attachments or files sent with the email. To view the EML file using Internet Explorer, you will need to convert it in MHT format.
