What is RTF & HTML message formatting?

Microsoft Outlook provides three message formats – RTF, HTML, and Plain Text – that allow you to determine whether you can add formatted text, like fonts, bullets, and pictures to the message body.

The two most commonly used message formats – RTF and HTML – are discussed below:

Rich Text Format (RTF)

The RTF is a file format from Microsoft that is primarily used for creating formatted text files. The universal file format contains information like, text, color, size, etc, which can be read by all Word processors. The in-built RTF readers in Microsoft Word for Windows and Microsoft Word for Macintosh translate from .doc to RTF and vice-versa. Some of the open-source and free Word prcessors that can view, edit, and save RTF files are AbiWord, OpenOffice.org, Kword, and Bean.

RTF file is automatically created when you create any new file using WordPad editor in Microsoft Windows. The 8-bit file format is mainly used by ebook readers because of its simplicity, low CPU processing requirements, and interoperability.

Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML)

HTML message format is a format primarily used for web pages. The format is used when you want to send a long message that contains text formatting, headers, bullets, italicized citations, horizontal lines, photographs, HTML styles, emphasized passages, and more. The message format provides more readability and understandability, and is used by most of the email programs like, Outlook Express 4.0, Netscape Messenger 4.0, Outlook 98, and Eudora 4.0. These message formats can also embed various exotic things like, audios, videos, electronic greeting cards, and more.
